About - Cherry Hense

I am a Registered Music Therapist with over a decade of clinical and research experience. After completing my performance degree (in violin) and working as an instrumental teacher and freelance musician for a number of years, I decided to pursue music therapy. After completing my Masters in Music Therapy at The University of Melbourne, I went straight into the field of adolescent mental health and gained valuable experience working in Acute in-patient mental health units, as well as in long term out-patient care. In my PhD, I focused on exploring music in young people’s mental health recovery. It was this work that inspired me to think beyond dominant medical frameworks and to seek a more collaborative and strengths-based way of working with young people. After completing my PhD, I spent time as a Post Doctoral researcher at The University of Melbourne, doing further research in the field of music therapy and adolescent mental health, as well as University teaching.
In more recent years, I have been moved by the Neurodiversity Paradigm and what it teaches us about mental health and the human experience based on natural differences in people's nervous systems. I have developed a passion for working with people who identify as neurodivergent and love the fact that no two people will ever be the same.
